Forex lot sizes, and how to calculate yours.

A lot is the unit of trade size in forex. Get it wrong and a good idea still fails your account. Get it right and every loss is a number you chose in advance.

The three sizes.

  • Standard lot = 100,000 units of base currency; about $10 per pip on EUR/USD.
  • Mini lot (0.10) = 10,000 units; about $1 per pip.
  • Micro lot (0.01) = 1,000 units; about $0.10 per pip.

The formula.

Lot size = (account × risk %) ÷ (stop in pips × pip value per lot).

Example: $50,000 account, 0.5% risk = $250. Stop of 25 pips on EUR/USD at $10/pip per lot: 250 ÷ (25 × 10) = 1.0 lot.

Gold and indices.

Contract sizes differ by instrument. On MT5, open the symbol specification to see the contract size and tick value before you size a trade on XAU/USD or an index.
