<!DOCTYPE html>Head and Shoulders Pattern — How to Trade It | MixFunded

Education · Price Action

The head and shoulders pattern, step by step.

Head and shoulders is a reversal pattern: three peaks, the middle one highest, sitting on a common neckline. It shows buyers failing to make progress. The inverse version marks bottoms.

Anatomy.

  • Left shoulder: a high followed by a pullback.
  • Head: a higher high and a pullback to about the same level.
  • Right shoulder: a lower high — the first sign buyers are weaker.
  • Neckline: the line joining the two pullback lows.

Trading it.

  • Wait for a candle close through the neckline. Patterns that never break are not patterns.
  • Entry on the break or on a retest of the neckline from the other side.
  • Stop above the right shoulder.
  • Target: the head-to-neckline distance projected from the break.

Filters that help.

The pattern works best after an extended trend and with falling volume into the right shoulder. In the middle of a range it is just noise.
