Candlestick patterns: reading the language of the market.

Candlesticks are more than just red and green bars; they are a visual representation of the battle between buyers and sellers. Memorizing names is easy; understanding the story they tell is how you trade like a professional.

The Anatomy of a Candle.

Every candle tells you four things: the Open, High, Low, and Close (OHLC). The 'Body' shows the conviction of the move, while the 'Wicks' show the rejection.

A long wick at the top of a candle means the market tried to go higher but was aggressively pushed back by sellers. This is the foundation of the Pin Bar pattern.

Top Patterns to Watch.

  • The Pin Bar (Hammer): A small body with a long wick, signaling a sharp rejection and potential reversal.
  • Engulfing: A large candle that completely 'swallows' the previous one, showing a sudden shift in momentum.
  • Doji: A candle with no body, signaling equilibrium and a possible pause in the trend.
  • Inside Bar: A candle that stays within the range of the previous one, showing consolidation before a breakout.

Context is King.

An engulfing candle in the middle of a choppy range means nothing. That same engulfing candle at a 61.8% Fibonacci retracement in a trending market is a high-probability signal.

To succeed in a prop firm evaluation, you must filter your patterns. Only take signals that occur at 'Confluence' points—where multiple reasons to trade overlap.

Candlesticks and Risk Management.

The beauty of candlestick patterns is that they give you a clear place to put your stop loss. Usually, the stop goes just beyond the wick of the pattern. This allows for tight stops and high reward-to-risk ratios.

By using these patterns for precise entries, you can keep your risk-per-trade low (e.g., 0.5%), giving you plenty of room before hitting your 3% daily drawdown limit.
