<!DOCTYPE html>How to Keep a Trading Journal (Template & Metrics) | MixFunded

Education · Trading Psychology

A trading journal you will actually keep.

A journal turns trades into data. Without one, you remember your best and worst trades and forget the hundreds in between — which are the ones that tell you what works.

Record on every trade.

  • Date, session, instrument and direction.
  • Setup name — keep a short fixed list.
  • Entry, stop, target and planned risk in dollars.
  • Result in R (multiples of risk), not just dollars.
  • One line on your state: rushed, calm, revenge, bored.

Metrics worth tracking.

  • Win rate and average R per setup.
  • Expectancy = (win rate × avg win) − (loss rate × avg loss).
  • Largest daily loss versus your daily limit.
  • Results by session and by day of week.

The weekly review.

Once a week, sort trades by setup. Drop the setup with negative expectancy, keep the best one, and write one rule for next week. Small, specific changes beat big resolutions.
