EMA vs SMA: which moving average to use.

Both smooth price. The difference is weighting — and that changes how quickly each one tells you the trend has turned.

The difference.

  • SMA: plain average of the last N closes; every bar counts equally.
  • EMA: weights recent bars more, so it turns faster.
  • Faster means earlier signals and more false signals.

Common settings.

  • 9 and 21 EMA for intraday momentum.
  • 50 EMA for the intermediate trend.
  • 200 SMA for the big-picture trend on the daily chart.

Which should you pick?

Use the EMA when you trade pullbacks in a trend and want responsiveness. Use the SMA for slower, broad trend filters. Most importantly, pick one and test it.
