Breakout trading: identifying momentum and surviving the traps.

Breakouts offer some of the fastest moves in the market, but they are also the most common places to get trapped. Success requires patience, confirmation, and strict risk controls.

Identifying a true breakout.

  • Consolidation: Price moves sideways in a tight range, building 'coiled' energy.
  • The Break: A strong, high-volume candle closes outside the established boundary.
  • Momentum: Indicators like RSI or MACD often show increasing strength in the direction of the break.

The power of the retest.

Entering exactly at the break is aggressive and prone to false signals. A more conservative approach is waiting for the 'retest.' This is when price returns to the broken level to verify it now acts as the opposite force (resistance becomes support).

For prop firm traders, the retest provides a much safer entry point with a logical place for a stop-loss just below the retest zone.

Surviving the false breakout.

Market makers often push price just past a known level to sweep liquidity (stop-losses). If price breaks out and immediately slams back into the range, it is a false breakout.

Never 'hope' a false breakout will turn back around. If the price returns deep into the range, the thesis is invalidated. Exit the trade to protect your 3% daily drawdown limit.

Strategic execution.

At MixFunded, we don't have a consistency rule, so you can catch the big breakout moves whenever they happen. However, because breakouts are high-volatility events, you must use a position size calculator.

If you are trading a $100,000 account, a 0.5% risk ($500) per trade allows you multiple attempts at catching a trend without ever threatening the daily or total loss limits.
