The difference.
- SMA: plain average of the last N closes; every bar counts equally.
- EMA: weights recent bars more, so it turns faster.
- Faster means earlier signals and more false signals.
Common settings.
- 9 and 21 EMA for intraday momentum.
- 50 EMA for the intermediate trend.
- 200 SMA for the big-picture trend on the daily chart.
Which should you pick?
Use the EMA when you trade pullbacks in a trend and want responsiveness. Use the SMA for slower, broad trend filters. Most importantly, pick one and test it.
