Forex margin requirements

Understand forex margin requirements with a worked example, and learn why available margin is not your funded-account loss budget.

What margin actually measures

Margin is the collateral required to hold a leveraged position. It is not a trading fee, and it is not the maximum amount you can lose. The platform sets aside margin while a trade remains open; the position can still generate floating profit or loss.

In a simplified example, a $100,000 position at 1:100 leverage requires $1,000 of margin. At 1:50 it requires $2,000. Actual requirements depend on the symbol specification, account currency, conversion rates and any tiered margin settings, so check the instrument in MT5 rather than applying one leverage figure to every market.

Notional exposure is different from account size

Notional value describes the market exposure of your position. A simulated $50,000 account with a $100,000 position is not risking $100,000 at its stop automatically: the potential loss also depends on the distance to the stop, contract size and tick value.

Determine the loss you are prepared to take before calculating lots. Then check whether that position fits within the available margin. Reversing that order — opening the largest position margin permits — can leave almost no room for a normal price move.

Why free margin is not safe spending money

Free margin is equity minus used margin. If equity is $50,000 and margin is $2,000, free margin is $48,000. That does not mean the account can lose $48,000 without violating a prop-firm rule.

Drawdown limits and any deposit-load restrictions are separate checks. A terminal can accept an order while the account is already close to a programme loss threshold. Margin availability describes capacity to hold positions, not permission to use the entire capacity.

Check the instrument before buying a challenge

Compare your strategy with the selected programme’s leverage and permitted instruments. The same lot size can require different margin on an evaluation and a funded account, or on forex and an index.

Review the programme rules, then use the tools page for an estimate and MT5 symbol specifications for the actual contract details. Keep a buffer for spread changes and floating losses; an estimate is not a guarantee that an order will remain safe.
