What Is Notional Value? Contract Size and Exposure Explained

Notional value is the full market value of the position you control, as opposed to the margin you posted to open it. Buy one standard FX lot of EUR/USD at 1.0800 and the notional value is $108,000, regardless of whether you posted $1,000 or $200 in margin.

It is the honest measure of exposure. Margin tells you what the broker required; notional tells you how much market you are actually holding, which is what determines your profit and loss.

How to calculate it

Notional value = contract size × number of contracts × current price. The contract size varies by instrument and asset class, which is the part most often gotten wrong.

In FX, one standard lot is 100,000 units of the base currency, a mini lot is 10,000 and a micro lot is 1,000. In futures, each contract has a defined multiplier — an E-mini S&P contract is 50 times the index level. In crypto CFDs, one lot is typically one unit of the underlying coin.

  • FX standard lot = 100,000 units of base currency
  • FX mini lot = 10,000 · micro lot = 1,000
  • Futures = index or price level × contract multiplier
  • Crypto CFD = coin quantity × coin price

Why it matters more than margin

Profit and loss are driven by notional exposure. A 1% move against a $108,000 notional position costs $1,080 whether you posted $200 or $5,000 of margin to open it.

Traders who think in margin terms consistently underestimate their exposure, because a small margin figure feels like a small position. Thinking in notional makes the actual size of the bet visible.

Notional and value per point

Value per point follows directly from notional. One standard EUR/USD lot has a notional of roughly $108,000 and a pip value of about $10 — one pip is 0.0001, and 0.0001 × 100,000 units equals $10.

That $10 per pip is the number that feeds your position sizing formula. Getting notional right is what makes the sizing calculation correct rather than approximate.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between notional value and margin?

Notional value is the total market value of the position you control. Margin is the capital you posted to open it. A position with $500 of margin can easily carry $50,000 of notional exposure, and it is the notional figure that determines your profit and loss.

How do I calculate notional value?

Multiply the contract size by the number of contracts by the current price. In FX a standard lot is 100,000 units of the base currency; in futures it is the price level times the contract multiplier.

Why does notional value matter for risk?

Because your profit and loss scale with notional exposure, not with the margin posted. Thinking in margin terms makes large positions feel small, which is how traders end up with far more exposure than they intended.
