The Cheapest Prop Firm Challenge: What $5 Actually Buys You

Cheap evaluations changed who can access funded capital. They also created a lot of noise. Here is how to tell the two apart.
Price is only one of four numbers
Compare these together, never in isolation:
- Entry fee โ what you pay to start
- Profit target โ what you must produce
- Max daily drawdown โ how much room you get per session
- Activation or funding fee โ what you pay after passing, if anything
A $5 evaluation with a workable 3% daily floor is a very different product from a $5 evaluation with a 2% total drawdown that nobody survives.
What a $5 entry is really for
At MixFunded the $5 tier exists so a trader can test the process โ the platform, the rules, the payout flow โ without risking a month's rent. It is a first rung, not the whole ladder. Programs scale up through the standard tiers to 200K and 500K accounts.
The fees that come later
Be honest about the full path. On the PAPP route there is a $150 activation fee once you pass, payable by card or crypto. That number should be on the page before you buy, not in an email after. If a firm hides post-pass fees, treat it as a red flag.
Cheap does not mean easy
The rules do not soften because the entry was low. You still face a 3% max daily drawdown, still need 3 trading days before a payout, and still need $50 minimum to withdraw. The discount is on access, not on discipline.
A sensible way to use a low-cost tier
- Buy the smallest tier and trade it exactly as you would trade a large one.
- Log every trade for a full month.
- If your process holds at $5, scale the account size โ not the risk percentage.
The traders who make low-cost evaluations work treat them as rehearsals with real rules. The ones who burn through them treat them as scratch cards.
