Surviving the daily drawdown: how funded traders stay alive

The daily loss floor ends more evaluations than bad strategies do. Here is how to trade around it instead of into it.

Most evaluations do not fail because the trader had no edge. They fail because one session went sideways and the account touched the daily floor before the edge had time to play out.

What the daily floor actually is

On a MixFunded evaluation the maximum daily drawdown is 3%. It is measured against your equity, not just closed balance, so an open losing position can breach it while you are still "in the trade". The floor resets each day โ€” but only after the day is over.

Three habits that keep you above it

  • Budget the day before you trade it. Decide the dollar figure you are willing to lose today, then split it into two or three trades. If the budget is gone, the session is over.
  • Size from the floor, not from the target. Work backwards: floor distance divided by your stop distance gives you the largest position you can hold. Our risk calculator does this in one step.
  • Never average into a loser. Adding size to a losing position is the single fastest route to a breach, because it moves your stop-out and your floor towards each other at the same time.

When you are close to the floor

If you are within roughly a third of the daily floor, the correct trade size is smaller, not bigger. Recovery trading is how a 1% day becomes a failed account. Close the terminal, take the drawdown, and start the next session with a full budget.

The mindset shift

A funded account is not a lottery ticket โ€” it is a risk mandate. The firm is not asking you to double the account; it is asking you to prove you can produce a return without ever touching the floor. Trade like the floor is the target and profits tend to arrive on their own.
