News restrictions vary wildly between firms. Here is what to check, and how to trade high-impact releases without breaching anything.

Can You Trade News on a Prop Firm Account? What the Rules Really Mean

"No news trading" means very different things at different firms. Some ban it outright, some restrict it around funded payouts, some allow it entirely. Read the rule before you assume.

What the restriction usually targets

Firms are not afraid of news. They are afraid of slippage and gap risk โ€” positions opened seconds before a release that fill nowhere near the intended price, and stops that jump straight through the floor.

Questions to answer before a release

  1. Is opening a position within X minutes of a release restricted?
  2. Are existing positions allowed to run through it?
  3. Which events count as high impact?
  4. Does the restriction apply to evaluation accounts, funded accounts, or both?

Practical rules that keep you safe

  • Know the calendar. High-impact releases are published in advance โ€” there is no excuse for being surprised by CPI.
  • Halve your size if you must be in the market around a release.
  • Widen nothing. If your stop needs to be wider for news, the trade is not the same trade.
  • Remember the daily floor is measured on equity. A violent spike against a floating position can breach it before you can act.

Spread and execution

Spreads widen dramatically for the first 30 to 90 seconds after major data. A 1.2 pip spread becoming 8 pips turns a good risk-reward setup into a bad one before price does anything. That alone is a reason to wait.

A simple policy that works

Do not open new positions in the ten minutes either side of a high-impact release. Manage what is already open. Come back when the spread normalises and the range of the first candle is defined โ€” that range is usually more tradeable than the spike itself.

MixFunded runs an economic calendar directly on the site so you can see the week's releases without leaving your workflow. Trading around news is allowed within the account rules; blowing your daily drawdown on a data spike is still your responsibility.
