What Is NFP? Trading Non-Farm Payrolls Explained

Quick answer

The monthly US jobs report and the most violent scheduled event in forex. What it contains, why it moves price, and how to survive it.

NFP stands for non-farm payrolls: the headline number in the US employment situation report, published by the Bureau of Labor Statistics on the first Friday of most months at 13:30 UTC. It counts the change in paid jobs outside farming, private households and the non-profit sector.

It matters because employment drives the Federal Reserve's rate decisions, and rates drive the dollar. That makes NFP the most reliably violent scheduled release in forex โ€” spreads widen, liquidity thins, and price can travel a normal day's range in seconds.

What is actually in the report

Traders react to more than the headline. The unemployment rate, average hourly earnings and revisions to previous months routinely override the payroll figure itself, which is why the first spike after release frequently reverses within minutes.

  • Non-farm payroll change โ€” the headline jobs number.
  • Unemployment rate โ€” the percentage of the labour force out of work.
  • Average hourly earnings โ€” the wage-inflation read the Fed watches.
  • Revisions to the two prior months, which can be larger than the new number.

Why price reacts the way it does

Markets trade the surprise, not the number. If payrolls come in far above consensus, expectations for tighter policy rise and the dollar typically strengthens; a large miss does the opposite. Gold and indices react to the same rate expectations in the other direction.

The mechanical reason moves are so large is that liquidity providers pull quotes across the release. With a thin book, a modest amount of aggressive volume moves price a long way โ€” and slippage on both entries and stops widens with it.

How to handle NFP on a funded account

The safest approach is to be flat through the release and trade the resolution once spreads normalise, typically 15 to 30 minutes later. The second-safest is to be positioned before it with size cut to a fraction of normal, accepting that your stop may fill well beyond its level.

The dangerous approach is a straddle with normal size. Slippage can breach a daily drawdown limit on a single fill, and drawdown here is measured on equity โ€” an open loser counts against the floor immediately, before you close anything.

  • Check the calendar on Thursday so Friday is never a surprise.
  • Cut size well before the release, or stand aside entirely.
  • Expect slippage on stops; do not assume your level is your fill.
  • Wait for spreads to normalise before trading the resolution.

Are you even allowed to trade it?

Many prop firms forbid trading around high-impact news in the terms, even when their marketing does not mention it, and enforce it after the fact by voiding trades. Read the rulebook before you plan a news strategy.

News trading is allowed here, along with expert advisors and weekend and overnight holds. The economic calendar with each release time is published on our calendar page.

Frequently asked questions

When is NFP released?

Usually the first Friday of each month at 13:30 UTC โ€” 8:30am New York โ€” from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. Holidays can shift the date, so check the calendar each month.

Which markets does NFP move most?

Dollar pairs first, especially EURUSD, GBPUSD and USDJPY, then gold and US indices, since all of them price the same interest-rate expectations.

Can you trade NFP on a prop firm account?

It depends on the firm. News trading is permitted at MixFunded; many firms ban it in their terms. What no firm can protect you from is slippage, so size accordingly.

Why did price reverse after the NFP spike?

Because the headline is only part of the report. Wage growth, the unemployment rate and revisions often point the other way, and the initial move reverses once the detail is read.
